Important Information on the Equifax Security Breach
Due to the severity and widespread nature of the Equifax breach (approximately 8 million New Yorkers were affected), we are sharing information about your rights and offering suggestions about how to protect yourself.
WHAT HAPPENED? According to Equifax, on July 29, 2017, it discovered that “criminals exploited a U.S. website application vulnerability to gain access to certain files.” While Equifax immediately stopped the intrusion, reported this incident to law enforcement and began conducting a comprehensive forensic investigation, this intrusion and the unauthorized access to consumers’ personal information started in mid-May 2017. This means that hackers obtained access to consumers’ highly sensitive personal information several months ago, including Social Security numbers, birth dates, addresses, driver’s license numbers, credit card numbers and other information.
