Recently, O'Connell and Aronowitz formed a Healthcare Fraud and Abuse Unit within the firm's Health Law Department. Consisting of seven highly experienced attorneys who collectively have approximately 140 years of experience in health law and criminal law, the Healthcare Fraud and Abuse Unit is providing diverse legal services to health care providers of all sizes and types, ranging from sole proprietors to clinics to large medical facilities. The Healthcare Fraud and Abuse Unit specializes in all fraud and abuse issues, both civil and criminal, that can or will impact health care providers.

Given the sharp increase in governmental policing of Medicaid and Medicare health care providers at the federal, state and even local levels, providers need to be more prepared than ever before for audits, investigations, and even criminal charges. Private payers such as insurance companies have also followed suit and become far more vigilant than they have been in policing their providers. Formed in part to prepare their health care clients for the enforcement actions of then-Governor Spitzer and Attorney General Cuomo, the Healthcare Fraud and Abuse Unit is now providing high quality legal services to health care clients throughout the State and beyond. The firm's location in New York's capital, and its proximity to state government offices, ideally lends itself to the ability of the Healthcare Fraud and Abuse Unit to be a rapid response team to react to governmental action of all types.
